Car and Driver Magazine: “We Must Consider... →
n8han:
While I was prepared for a screed about how “bike paths” and other silly things (sarcasm intended) were depleting the highway fund and taking away the precious “playground” of automobiles, I instead found that the car magazine I read as a boy and that has catered to car lovers for 50 years — came to the conclusion that perhaps simply building more roads and maintaining all existing ones...

Kabak weighs in on Apple coming to Grand Central →
I’ve been at Grand Central waiting around for Metro North trains before. Apple stores are great stores to browse in; they’ll just let you park yourself there in front of a gadget—I’ve checked email, read the news, etc. This build will be great for Apple and GC in terms of numbers and profit (and I think Apple just likes saying that it has stores in famous places), but...

Climbers →
I’m catching up on my New Yorker issues, and was absolutely riveted by this story about Team Rwanda, the country’s professional cyclists. Issues of national history and ethnic identity; death; personal redemption; suffering, fear, and avoidance; and poverty weave through the story of these young men and their American coach.

Seeing L.A. in a way most natives never dare →
carschmar:
I like this story about a family of tourists using public transit, but I think it’s important to remember that the challenge/adventure of public transit is more welcome when you’re on vacation and have all the time in the world to get to the beach or a burbling pool of tar. When you’re commuting to work daily or trying to make it to a job interview on time, it can be a headache....

It's now a crime to harass bikers in L.A. →
carschmar:
I have a few contenders, including, most recently, a driver who slammed on his brakes at a green light directly in front of me and then accused me of not following traffic laws.
[Update: Clarification from Sgt. David Krumer below.]
It appears that some folks are not exactly sure what harassment means within the context of the ordinance. You can still yell at a cyclist who engaging...

MTA adding security cameras to buses →
Is it just me, or does the plan—“Each bus will be equipped with six cameras — five on the outside, one on the inside — that will store but not transmit a video.”—not really sound great? I think I’d do four on the outside and two inside, or keep the five on the outside (to capture every angle of an accident to determine at-fault, etc., I’d presume) but still two...
